Why You Need to Adapt a Positive Mindset
Thoughts are powerful. They drive our attitude and actions. They determine our success and failure. I have learned these lessons the hard way. Just like most people, I have always struggled with my grades back when I was in high school. I have cried myself to sleep so many times thinking how low my grades were, how poor my vocabulary and communication skills were. I got tired of not getting the result I want because I kept on focusing on the “external” things. Then I got tired again til I got tired repeatedly. I got so tired that I finally got tired of getting tired. That was when I finally realized I needed to do something different. I needed to think differently and stop thinking like a casualty. I needed a correct and positive mindset.
The first time I had a real conversation with myself was a real life changer for me. I started asking myself why and answered those questions myself. Afterwards, I started scrutinizing my attitudes, my ways, my beliefs and my habits. After all these, I started creating action plans. My plans helped me in my struggle to break free from my bad habits. I got so tired of being tired that I actually studied my modules and started doing new things. I challenged myself and questioned my doubts. The moment I started to think about what I can do instead of those I cannot, I discovered a whole bunch of things that I could actually do. These lessons not only change my grades, it changed my life. Have I continued harboring negative thoughts instead of being open to possibilities, I cannot even imagine where I would be.
Correct your paradigms, Change your life
“Watch your thoughts for they become words; Watch your words for they become actions; Also Watch your actions for they become habits; Watch your habits for they become your character; And watch your character, for it becomes your destiny! What we think, we become.”
If you want to change, you have to focus on the root of it all- your thoughts and perception. Your thoughts dictate your success and downfall, your beauty and flaws, your character and demons.
In Sean’s Coveys famous book “The 7 habits of highly effective teens”, he talked about paradigms. Paradigms are the way you think, the way you see things, your perception of yourself and the things around you. Paradigms are the glasses that guides you on your way to where you are going. If you are wearing the wrong prescription glasses for you, then you will not see things the way you should. If you scrutinize your actions more closely, you will realize that your actions are direct outcomes of your paradigms. What you think will become what you do. What you do will become what you are. Therefore, if you want to change yourself, change and correct the way you see things. With these said, a positive mindset is the key.
You are what you think
Is your paradigm of yourself hopeless? Good for nothing? Then that is what you are. However, if you change this paradigm and start seeing yourself as someone capable of changing for the better, then you are finally going somewhere. If you think that the world is against you, then it is. However, if you divert your attention to the things you can control, the things that are not against you, then you are certainly a step further from the starting point.
Most of the times we focus on our weaknesses and misfortunes instead of focusing on what we can do. Our primary instinct is to whine, complain and even run away from our problems. We turn to the people around us expecting them to help us solve our problems then we get disappointed if they let us down. But you see, when it seems like no one else can help you, if you just look within and face the problem boldly, you’ll unbelievably find the strength you need. Trust me… face it, say a prayer and you will be fine.
A positive Mindset: Happy thoughts, happy life
Finally, we must use the power of our thoughts for our own good. For good thoughts leads to good habits, and good habits brings the good things. We must guard our mind from negative thoughts that would ruin us. Because from negative thoughts spring worries, anxiety, doubts and other negative emotions that are so powerful they could surely ruin a life.
We must guard our minds so that we do not fall into fallacies that will only bring us down- our incorrect perception of happiness for instance. We keep on finding ways to change the way we look, the way we act, the way we perform and how to make people like us more in order for us to be happy. Little do we realize that we are seeing only the trivial things. Little do we know that the significant things needed for the change we are seeking lies inside us-invisible to eye. It is as if we are all trying to clean our room by hiding our trashes in the closet. We only focus on the fruits, not the roots of things. We would never be fully happy with any material things if we were not happy inside.
Happiness, just like almost all aspect of our lives, is a state mind. We can have nothing but still be joyful, just as we can have everything and still feel empty. What to do? Minimize the negative thoughts because there are many things to be grateful about. Cultivate a positive mindset. Just think happy and be happy.
